This story is important because we will later discuss what kind of people and what kind of behavior invites possession by, or attracts, evil spirits. Don’t think that this type of story is either specifically Chinese or South American Indian; I picked it at random because I wanted a certain type of story, not a definite story, but a type which is to be found all over the world. To emphasize the one little point about the girl who doesn’t go to the party and is thus exposed to a wood spirit, I will give you a relatively close European parallel, a Grimm story called “Frau Trude” (“Mrs. Trude.”).
